Why Ambient Storage Can Be Just as Safe as Air-Conditioned (And Better for the Planet)

10/5/2026 · EcoStorage Team

Most traditional self-storage in Singapore runs air-conditioning 24/7. We run most of our space at ambient temperature instead, and for most items, that works just as well.

Walk into most self-storage facilities in Singapore and you'll hear the air-conditioning running constantly, every unit, every corridor, all day and night. It's treated as a default, and it's also a significant, continuous source of energy use for items that stay in good condition without it.

Furniture, boxed belongings, books, clothing, kitchenware, the vast majority of household and business items tolerate Singapore's ambient warehouse conditions well when properly protected. Physical damage from poor handling or inadequate wrapping poses the real risk during storage, not temperature, which is why our pallet-and-shrink-wrap method focuses protection where it actually matters.

Some items genuinely need a controlled environment, and the reasons are specific, not just general caution. Wood can warp or crack as humidity swings between seasons. Leather and certain fabrics are prone to mould growth in sustained high humidity. Paper documents and photographs can absorb moisture and degrade over long periods. Electronics risk internal corrosion from humidity exposure over time. Certain manufacturing materials have their own tolerances depending on composition. That's why we keep a dedicated portion of our space, around 15%, as enclosed crate storage for exactly these cases.

Singapore's climate makes this a genuinely higher-stakes decision than in drier countries. Average relative humidity here sits around 80% year-round, well above the 30-50% range most humidity-sensitive materials are rated to tolerate long-term. That's the actual technical reason climate control matters for specific items here, not just a general assumption that air-conditioning is always safer.

Running most of our warehouse at ambient temperature is a deliberate operational choice. It meaningfully lowers our energy use and carbon footprint compared to facilities that condition every square foot around the clock, 24/7 air-conditioning across an entire warehouse is a substantial, continuous electricity load, and running it for items that don't need it is a cost the environment bears for no real benefit to the customer. This is part of why we're currently working toward LowCarbonSG certification, a formal recognition process for businesses that can demonstrate genuine, measurable reductions in operational carbon footprint.

Deciding between standard and crate storage for your own items comes down to one honest question: is this specific item sensitive to heat or humidity? For most of what people store, the answer is no, and skipping air-conditioning for those items directly cuts unnecessary energy use without any real tradeoff in how well the item is protected.
