Moving Between Rentals in Singapore: A Timeline and Storage Checklist

When your old lease ends before your new one starts, storage bridges the gap. Here's how to plan around it.
A gap between leases ranks among the most common reasons people in Singapore need short-to-medium-term storage. Your old tenancy ends on one date, your new one starts on another, and the two rarely line up.
Plan storage as soon as you know your move-out date. Tenancy end dates are usually fixed well in advance, and pickup slots fill up quickly around common lease renewal periods, so book early.
If you're in an HDB flat, factor in handover requirements specifically, many leases require the unit returned in a defined condition, sometimes including professional cleaning, which affects how early you need everything, including furniture, out of the space. Condo leases typically have similar handover clauses plus a move-out inspection with the management office, worth scheduling around your pickup date rather than after it.
Deposit return timing is worth planning around too. Landlords commonly take one to two weeks after handover to return a deposit, and a smooth, fully-cleared handover tends to make that process faster and less contested than leaving items behind for a later collection.
Work out the actual gap length before you book. Even a few days between leases creates a genuine need for storage, since most people can't move everything directly from one rental into the next, especially with a cleaning or handover inspection on either end. Knowing the real gap, even as an estimate, gets you an accurate quote instead of a guess.
A lease-gap move actually involves coordinating two separate moves, not one: items leaving the old place, and items arriving at the new one, often with storage bridging a period in between. Treating these as two distinct events with their own checklists, rather than one continuous move, tends to reduce the chances of something falling through the cracks.
Think through what you'll need during the gap itself. Keep items with you if you're staying with family, in a hotel, or in temporary housing between leases; everything else can go into storage until your new place is ready.
If your gap is on short notice, a sudden lease termination, an unexpectedly early move-out requirement, the same storage process still applies, but booking as early as you can once you know the dates matters even more, since short-notice pickups have less flexibility around scheduling than a move planned weeks out.
Coordinate the return delivery with your new lease start date, not your move-out date from the old place. Build in some flexibility if there's any uncertainty about exactly when you'll get keys to the new unit.
A lease-gap move is temporary, but pack and wrap items properly anyway. A few weeks in storage gives an unprotected item plenty of time to get damaged in transit.
